France’s Amphibious Mini Moke Is No Joke

You can float along in your car…

It is cool to have a vehicle that can work on both land and water. Lazareth, a French automaker, has added style to this already cool concept by creating an amphibious craft from the Mini Moke.

British Motor Corporation made the original Moke, a conversion of the Mini to an off-road vehicle. They became very popular in beach buggys at resorts along the coast. Lazareth takes this idea and builds a version that can travel from the sand into the water.

The 400cc single-cylinder, watercooled engine of the Lazareth Moke produces 19 horsepower (14.2 kilowatts), for road duty and 6 horsepower (4.5 kW) when it is in water. The vehicle can reach speeds of up to 7 knots (8 mph) on the waves and 56 mph (90 km/h) on the road. Because of its low power, the Moke qualifies as a quadricycle in France. It is also classified as a dinghy. A boat license is not required.

This little cart is easy to drive. You can get around on the ground with an automatic transmission or a four-wheel drive. One twist of the dial will switch between aquatic mode and off-road mode.

The aluminum body helps keep the craft’s weight down to 970 lb (440 kg). Two people can fit inside.

The website of Lazareth doesn’t have a price but it states that the vehicle is currently available. This would be an amazing vehicle to drive in warm weather.

Although it can’t be used on water, a company in the United States now offers an electric Moke, appropriately known as the eMoke. This model is a low-speed Neighborhood electric vehicle, and the top speed is only 25 mph (40 km/h). There are a variety of battery options that provide a range of 40 to 64 kilometers and 90 to 90 miles (145 km) on a single charge. Prices start at $15,975.
