General Motors Hacked In Cyberattack, Personal Data Exposed

It occurred between April 11 and 29, 2022.

Data and privacy are just as important in this technological age as cash. Hackers can gain access to many things, provided they have the right information. None of these benefits the owner.

General Motors appears to be one of the latest victims of cyberattacks. The company’s breach notice stated that GM discovered suspicious logins between April 11 and 29, 2022, on customer accounts online. This led to unauthorized redemptions of reward points customers using for gift cards. GM stated that the feature was disabled immediately after hacking was detected.

According to the automaker hackers accessed information from GM’s online/mobile applications accounts. “First and last names, personal email addresses, usernames, phone numbers for registered family members tied with your account, last known or saved favorite location information (if applicable), subscribed OnStar Package, family members avatars and photos (if upload), profile picture and search and destination information, reward cards activity and fraudulently redeemed rewards points”

GM stated that despite the volume of information accessed, the most important information was not accessible to hackers because they were not stored in customers’ GM accounts. These include date, Social Security number and driver’s licence number.

GM has already notified affected customers. Customers were required to reset their passwords during their next log-ins. A report to Law Enforcement was also sent.
