Genesis GV80 Coupe Supposedly Planned to Fight BMW X6

Hyundai’s luxury division doesn’t want Germans to take all the sales of the coupe-SUV market.

Genesis was late to SUVs, so it decided to focus on sedans with the G90, G80 and G70. The luxury division of Hyundai is apparently looking to make up the difference by expanding its high-riding offerings beyond GV80, GV70 and the upcoming electric cross. According to South Korean portal , a GV80 coupe is in development and will begin road testing as soon as July.

However, coupe does not refer to a vehicle that is essentially a car. The GV80 Coupe will remain an SUV at the end. The rear doors will be retained, which is what a coupe has. It will be a competitor to the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe. To mimic the coupe-like silhouette, it will sacrifice some cargo functionality and rear passenger headroom in favor of a gently sloped roofline.

It’s possible to have a Genesis coupe that lives up the name. The world premiere of the GV80 was held in January 2020. It featured a teaser for a two-door coupe with the profile. It is unclear if it was the 2018 Essentia, but the concept impressed with its stunning body at its debut 2018 New York Auto Show.

The Genesis lineup will expand further with the addition of a G70 Shooting Brake. Another car that will not be true to its name is the G70 Shooting Brake. This traditional wagon will have four doors instead of two. The portfolio will include the more practical G70 and a road-going version the tiny Mint concept, which was unveiled at the NYIAS one year later.
