Volkswagen announced plans to use Geneva Motor Show to present the Polo BlueMotion concept vehicle. This strongly suggests what we can expect from the company when it releases the most fuel-efficient Polo ever in 2010.
The new 1.2-liter direct-injection 1.2 liter TDI engine produces 55 kW (75 PS), and emits only 87 g/km CO2. The engine’s small dimensions and numerous fuel-saving technologies make it one of the world’s most cost-effective models. It consumes just 3.3L/100km (71.3 MPG) of fuel.
Volkswagen did everything possible to make the Polo BlueMotion light (it weighs in at 1,080 kg) and still provide all the latest fuel-saving technologies. This concept has an advanced engine stop/start system and a regenerative brake system that reduces alternator-related engine loads.
This concept features an exterior that has been specially tuned to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag. The eco-friendly design features include a reduced ride height of 10mm, modified front ends, aerodynamically optimized underbody and 15-inch alloy wheels with low rolling resistance tires.
The current Polo BlueMotion averages 3.8L/100km. It’s pretty safe to assume that the technology shown on the concept will be made into production when the next generation Polo BlueMotion launches in 2010.
