GM Says Hummer EV Could Be the First Electric Truck to Market

GM Says Hummer EV Could Be the First Electric Truck to Market

Rivian could sell trucks by the end this year, so that’s quite bold.

The GMC Hummer, an electric pickup truck, is a newcomer in a world that has seen many vehicles for years. The fact that the Hummer name is being renamed is not a sign of GM’s demise. It is expected to be available at dealerships in fall 2021. This is right around when other EV trucks will arrive. Mark Reuss, GM President, suggested today that the Hummer could outperform all EV truck to market, during the Capital Markets Day presentation to investors.

This is a bold statement. Not least because of the Rivian’s expected arrival in the year. It’s possible that Reuss didn’t know Rivian was on a timetable or doesn’t consider Rivian a competitor. However, Rivian has been building an electric vehicle that looks great so far. If all goes according to plan it will be the first.

It is also difficult to ignore GM’s current state in electrification. Technically, GM beat all other companies with its EV1 way back 1990s. However, the Bolt is currently the only electrified GM product available in the U.S., which is about as far from a huge Hummer EV pickup. The company has stopped making hybrids between all divisions. It also killed the Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac ELR and the Hummer EV pickup.

It’s clear that Tesla rocked the pickup truck world last fall with its bizarre Cybertruck unveil. Tesla stole the spotlight on the electric pickup truck market, regardless of whether or not it ever enters production. We suspect that the Detroit Three will feel a lot of pressure to win, despite trucks being the mainstay of North American automakers. The GMC Hummer is an obvious choice, as well as a desire to be the first electric truck that people can purchase.

It will be a race for market. It will be a race to market, Rivian or not. Ford should have an electric F150 next fall. We also know that Tesla’s Cybertruck will arrive in the latter part of next year. Also, the boxy, hand-built bollinger will be available for sale next year.
