GM to Launch New Brand in Australia Following Holden's Retirement

It appears that GM wants to stay.

General Motors has had a very difficult relationship with Holden and Australia generally. With the launch of what appears to be a brand new brand, General Motors will move in a new direction in their involvement in Australia’s market after Holden closed down operations in February. This was an unfortunate decision that caused a lot of controversy . Although it isn’t a brand that has a lot of power, it appears to be a dedicated organization to bringing in specific GM cars. That’s at least what we expect.

Based on the GM Authority data, some trademark filings confirm that GM Special Vehicles (GMSV), have arrived in Australia. Just a few days apart, two filings were made with IP Australia under the names GMSV or SV Speciality Vehicles. The filing is vague. GMSV Specialty Vehicles and SV Specialty Vehicles cover a wide range of products and services.

GMSV appears to be continuing the work of Holden Special Vehicles, who brought in the Chevrolet Camaro (and Silverado) to Australia. They also converted the cars to right-hand drive. Although a list of models is not yet available, there are rumors that the Corvette could be coming to Australia. The organization is still in its infancy and many details are missing. Let’s hope that GM is able to do better this time around.
