GMC Hummer EV Hit With A Recall For Taillight Problems

The documents show that all units potentially involved have defects.

“Immediately following the recall decision on March 3, 2022, GMC Hummer representatives proactively contacted these customers and made arrangements to replace the taillamps on these vehicles. Repairs have been completed on all 10 vehicles.”

GMC has begun delivery of the Hummer EVO late last year. However, it turned out that some of these vehicles will be returned by dealers to do minor repairs as part of a recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that 2022 Hummer Electric Vehicles (EVs) manufactured between October 5, 2021 and January 20, 2022 did not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. (FMVSS No. 108, “Lamps and reflective devices, as well as associated equipment.”

GM therefore decided to recall 10 vehicles manufactured after the aforementioned dates. All of these vehicles were believed to have the defect. According to GM, Hummer EVs manufactured after January 20 were built using parts that contained corrected software or were damaged before shipment.

The documents indicate that the vehicles contain embedded software in their microcontrollers. This can cause one or both of the rear taillamps to 8er to become inoperative or to remain partially or fully illuminated. All functions of the taillamp (brake, turn signal and backup lamps, side marker, clearance lamp and taillight) will stop working if it stops. These functions will continue to work even after the vehicle has been turned off if the taillamp is still fully or partially lit.

It is obvious that the defect in question poses a safety threat to the user. GM has taken the initiative to recall the product without consent.

The Part573 Safety Recall Report of NHTSA shows that there is a remedy. It is to replace the taillight assemblies if needed. These vehicles are covered by warranty so owners don’t have to worry about the cost.

If you are one of the early owners of the GMC Hummer EV GMC Hummer EV, it is a good idea to check with your dealer if this recall has been initiated. They have already been notified. Owners will be notified by April 25, 2022.
