GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox are being recalled due to wiper failure

The company does not yet have a solution.

General Motors will recall windshield wiper modules on 367,808 examples in the United States. The campaign will impact the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox built between April 17, 2012 and August 15, 2013. It will also include the 2013 GMC Terrain, which was produced between April 17 and August 12, 2013.

Over time, the ball joints of the windshield wiper module may corrode and become loose. This could cause the wipers to cease working or one or both of them to fail. This could pose a serious safety problem if parts fail during rainy conditions.

GM was alerted to the problem in these crossovers by a Canadian brand quality manager on December 15, 2015. He reported the windshield wiper problems to the Speak Up For Safety Program. On March 9, 2016, the company began a formal investigation. The initial failure rates for warranty data in Canada were higher than those in the U.S. GM decided that Canada would be the first to recall the product. However, more data from the U.S. prompted a safety campaign. The firm does not specify whether these components have caused any accidents.

GM claims that it doesn’t yet know what caused the windshield wiper module problems. The company is unable to resolve the problem. This is something that owners should be aware of until there is a fix. The automaker does not inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration when customer notification would start.

While the company is working to keep these SUVs current by offering special editions, spy shots suggest that new generation are in the works. They are expected to arrive in 2017 for the 2018 model-year. The pair may be smaller than their replacements.
