GM’s new Duramax diesel engine is its most powerful to date.

General Motors already announced the new Duramax diesel engine in its 2017 model year. The option will be available for both the Chevy silverado as well as the GMC Sierra. However, there are no official numbers on the new powertrain. Until now.

Consumers will have access to 445 horsepower (331 Kilowatts) as well as 910 pound-feet (1.221 newtonmeter) of torque. While the new engine is more powerful than the Ford Super Duty in horsepower (445 vs. 440), it will still be slightly slower in torque (910 vs. 925). It’s not an insignificant figure, however.

This engine is a substantial improvement over the previous generation. The new engine has 360 horsepower (268 kilowatts) but 765 pound-feet (1.037 newtonmeter) of torque. This should appeal to those who want GM’s trademark reliability paired with a more powerful diesel option.

The leaked figures were posted on the GM Global Propulsion Product Guide, which is available on the GM Powertrain Website. They were discovered by the GM Authority sleuths. We should also mention that all of these figures are SAE J1349 certified.

The engine will be made at the GM-Isuzu D-Max facility in Moraine, Ohio. It will be available in 2017 on Chevrolet Silverado as well as GMC Sierra Heavy Duty models. The engine will be paired with an Allison 1000 transmission.

The new Duramax 6.6-liter will have 445 horsepower (331kilowatts) and is the strongest competitor in the segment. With 440 horsepower (328 Kilowatts), Ford is second, followed by Ram with 385 horsepower (287 Kilowatts), and Nissan Titan which has a lowly 310 horsepower (231kilowatts).

Although the Duramax doesn’t have as much torque as the Ford Super Duty, it has 925 pound feet (1,254newtonmeter). However, the Duramax is significantly better than the Ram’s 865 pounds (1,172 newtonmeter) of torque and the Nissan’s 752 newtonmeter (752 newtonmeter) of torque.
