The hybrid powertrain produces 1,065 horsepower.
Hino is a truck manufacturer, and you might know it as a commercial truck maker. But the company also has a rig that will be used in the 2022 Dakar Rally. It looks tough and the hybrid-assisted diesel powertrain makes 1,065 horsepower (794 Kilowatts) total system output.
The racing rig is based on the Hino 600 series truck and has an 8.866-liter turbodiesel inline-six engine. This mill produces 789 horsepower (588 kW) as well as 1,693 pound-feet (2.295 Newton-meters). The hybrid system produces 276 horsepower (206 kW). The big truck is powered by a 211.3-gallon (880-liter) fuel tank.
The power is transmitted through a six speed automatic transmission with full time all-wheel drive. The transmission case has a transfer box that allows you to switch between high- or low-range gearing.
Hino claims that the truck has a lightweight rear body made of aluminum and fiberglass. This truck still weighs in at a staggering 18,960 pounds (8.600 kilograms).
Hino competed last in the 2020 Dakar Rally. It finished in the last spot of the ten vehicles. All the competitors were European trucks made by brands such as Kamaz, MAZ and Iveco. The hybrid powerplant may give Hino an advantage in 2022.
This year’s Dakar Rally looks promising, at least in terms the number of machines participating. Toyota’s Hilux pickup has the twin-turbo V6 of the Land Cruiser’s 3.5-liter engine. It produces significantly more power than the production version at 409 horsepower (305 kW) or 479 lbft (650 Nm).
The Audi RSQ E-Tron also has front and back electric motors. This is a modified version of the 2021 E-Tron FE07 Formula E vehicle. A turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is available as an extension of the range.
From January 2 to January 14, the 2022 Dakar Rally will be held. The event will be held entirely in Saudi Arabia this year.
