Honda Develops Shoe-Based Navigation System for Visually Impaired

The Japanese automaker has some pretty cool technology.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced Ashirase, Inc. This is the first startup to come from Ignition Honda’s new program for business creation. Ashirase, Inc.’s first technologically advanced product, is quite innovative, but it’s not for cars. To assist visually impaired people with walking, the company is working on an in-shoe navigation system. Honda plans to start sales of the system (also known as Ashirase) by March 2023.

The Ashirase is a combination of a smartphone app, a 3D vibration device and a motion sensor attached to the show. The Ashirase uses vibrations to tell users when they should go straight, left, right, or stop. Honda stated that the product should allow users to intuitively understand the route, so they don’t need to be constantly aware of directions. This will make for a safer and more relaxed walking experience. Not to be confused, the Global Navigation Satellite System provides route guidance while the vibrators align with the foot’s nerve later. Vibration through the foot allows for freedom with the hands of the user, which can also be used to hold a cane. We are pretty certain that Honda is more than an automaker. Honda is also a tech company, constantly developing new products that can help in many areas of life.

Honda introduced last year the Ropot. This is a blind spot warning system for children 7 years old in Japan, when they are walking. These technological devices were born out of a need. The Ropot was the result of the number of children who have been injured while walking. Honda discovered that many visually impaired people need assistance when walking and created the Ashirase.
