Cars.com compiles each year a list of American-made vehicles. The American-Made Index is appropriately titled. It considers a range of factors such as manufacturing plants, parts source, total production and how they all contribute to the US economy. Americans love to purchase American-made automakers, but is it really the best option for supporting the American economy?
Honda is a dominant presence in the top 10. The second half of the group is dominated by four Honda vehicles: the Passport and Pilot. The Ridgeline ranks sixth on the AMI as the highest-ranking nondomestic vehicle. The Toyota Tundra rounds out the second-half. Tesla is the only automaker to have four vehicles in the top 10. However, Tesla has just two. The Model 3 is the most-American-made vehicle and holds the number one spot. The Ford Mustang is number two. It jumped 34 places over last years’s AMI ranking. The Jeep Cherokee is in third place, followed by the Chevrolet Corvette fifth.
The dominance of Honda continues to be evident in the top 20 with the Acura RDX and Acura TLX joining the list to take seven positions. To compare, Ford and General Motors each have three models in top 20 to claim runner-up status. General Motors, however, was the overall winner with 19 cars ranking on the index. Honda was at 13 followed by Toyota at 12, and Ford at 11. Three hundred and forty-four models were evaluated, with 90 making the final list. “The 2021 AMI arrives against the backdrop of scarce inventory amid microchip shortages and heightened consumer demand,” stated Kelsey Mays (assistant managing editor) and lead AMI researcher at Cars.com. “Despite all this, consumers still have a strong desire to buy American-made vehicles because the economy is still recovering from the effects the pandemic. The index allows shoppers to find the best American-made vehicles and makes it possible for them to make the greatest impact.
