The Type R name will remain with the Civic for now.
The Japanese company has enjoyed a huge success with the first Honda Civic TypeR made available to American consumers. The American market continues to demand the most extreme Honda models, even years after their launch. Cars are still being sold at full price. Honda informs Mot that it has no plans for the Type R name expansion to other models in its portfolio.
Hideki Kakinoma is the project leader for 2020 Civic Type R. He shared this information at an interview in Milan, Italy. The engineer also stated that Honda does not have any plans to make Type R models other than the Civic.
Kakinomasan stated that the ‘R’ at Civic Type R stands for racing. Therefore, expanding into an SUV or crossover is not a good idea. “The Civic is the only Honda vehicle that meets our Type R requirements.”
It is fair to ask about Acura, TLX, and NSX. Both of these have racing history (the NSX races today). Kakinoma believes Honda will not share the Type R nameplate on any future Acura products.
The engineer explained to Motor1.com that Type S is used to define Acura’s performance flagship.
Based on this comment, we can infer that any future Acura model that is performance-oriented will retain Type S as its name. You need only look at the Type-S concept car to see a future with that name.
Honda informs Motor1 that he has decided against expanding the Type R name. While BMW, Mercedes and Mercedes have expanded the performance ranges of their vehicles to include other types of vehicles, Honda intends to keep its Type R name centered on racing, even though it may mean a loss in sales. We can expect the Type R name on the Civic to remain the same until we see another Honda product worthy for a racetrack.
