Hot Porsche Panamera ‘Lion’ May Have Just Set A Nurburgring Lap Record

This is the fastest sedan in Green Hell at 7 minutes 11 seconds.

Porsche may just have set a Nurburgring lap-record for sedans using the modified Panamera “Lion.” Last year we reported that the Porsche Panamera Turbo Lion is lighter and more powerful than the standard version and may have set a lap record of 7 minutes 11 seconds for sedans using the modified Panamera “Lion.”

Rumours started to circulate that Porsche had arrived at the Nurburgring with an official timekeeper, notary, and the same stripped-and-camouflaged Panamera as we have seen previously. Our sources say that the company did a cool lap to photograph cars-to-cars (likely for promotional purposes and press). It was during this lap that spy photographers were able get closer views of the Porsche.

The company was not open about its attendance at the Nurburgring on that day. Representatives have not yet responded to our requests for comment. We’ll update this article when they do. We expect some sort of announcement, given all the noise at the track.

The ground is sparse with details of the so-called Lion. Although this batch of photos does not reveal much, we can see some intercoolers behind front grille openings. The Panamera rides on 21-inch SportDesign wheels in a basketweave design. Yellow brake calipers are also visible to indicate the company’s carbon ceramic braking package. Behind the wheel, a bucket seat and racing harness are visible.

Previous reporting suggests that this Panamera could have 750 horsepower (559 Kilowatts) from its gasoline-only engine. It is likely to be a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8 like the 550hp (405-kW) Panamera Turbo. The Lion, who is now stiffened and safe-fied by a roll cage has reportedly lost 550 lbs as part of its exercise program.

We are also curious if Porsche has preserved any interior, as we believe that setting a sedan lap record with a two-seat hatchback in a stripped version of the car would be a bit cheat. We hope that the company gave the car at least four racing seats to allow the entire family to enjoy the Nordschleife’s beautiful surroundings.
