Hyundai Elantra N TCR Revealed as Fully Fledged Race Car
An Elantra N road-going Elantra N is in development.

Remember the Elantra prototype that our spy caught back in June. The TCR-spec version was the compact sedan’s new counterpart, and Hyundai has officially introduced its new Touring Car. The new Touring Car joins Hyundai’s growing motorsport portfolio, which also includes TCR derivatives for the i30 N or Veloster N, as well as the crazy Veloster N ETCR equipped with a rear-wheel drive and a mid-mounted electrical motor.

Already, the Elantra N TCR has covered 5,000 km (3,106 miles), of testing on various circuits in Europe. Hyundai claims that it’s been running both endurance and sprint versions of its race car. It has been in production for three months, and they expect to have it ready for customers by the end. Hyundai Motorsport benefited from the experience gained in engineering the Veloster N TRCR and i30 NTCR.

The Elantra, a front-wheel-drive vehicle, is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine taken from roads cars. Although its output is unknown at the moment, TCR regulations require that it produce a maximum horsepower of approximately 340 hp (302 pound-feet) and peak torque of 410 Newton meters (302 pound). The newest TCR Hyundai will be powered by a paddle-shift six-speed gearbox.

TCR regulations also stipulate that the car must weigh at least 1,265 kg (2,789 lbs) including the driver. Hyundai Motorsport hasn’t provided any images of the interior. However, you can see that the cabin has been stripped to its essentials and has a full roll cage. The bulging front wheel arches and large exhaust at the center, as well as the huge wing at the rear, indicate that this model is more exotic than a regular one.

The Elantra is not the only model that the South Korean marque is developing. A road-going N model will be available to replace the sporty N-Line. The warm version of the Elantra has 201 horsepower, but the full fat N model will offer up to 275 horsepower when it goes on sale in the United States for the model year 2022.
