More wagons would make the automotive world a better place.
We love wagons so when an automaker stops making SUVs and introduces an estate, combi or whatever else you want, we are thrilled. Hyundai has not spoken out about giving the Elantra a long-roof treatment. However, SRK Design has been imagining a more family-friendly version of the edgy sedan.
We love the idea of an Elantra wagon but it is unlikely for two reasons. First, wagon sales aren’t great in today’s SUV-obsessed society. This is especially true outside Europe. Therefore, such a product wouldn’t be a viable business proposition. It would also clash with the recently updated i30 wagon, which was given a mid-cycle facelift as well as a sporty-looking N Line.
Hyundai probably won’t be making an Elantra wagon but there are rumors of a new model with this body style coming from its luxury sub-brand. This is Genesis, and William Lee, its global boss. A G70 wagon was recently mentioned by Lee, but has not been approved. Genesis may have teased this at the beginning of the month with a shadowy preview of its future lineup. The G70 will likely spawn a wagon version. This is due to the sedan’s midcycle facelift, which will bring the company’s signature double lights theme.
A rumor exists about a Sonata wagon to replace the i40 in Europe. However, that report was from December 2018, and we haven’t heard any news about it since. Other than Hyundai and Genesis, there are other automakers that have not put wagons on the back burner. To offer a stylish alternative to the Passat Variant’s Arteon ‘Shooting Brake,’ VW will soon launch an Arteon (complete with an R model), while Cadillac may release a CT5 wagon. Mercedes also reportedly plans to target the Audi A4 Allroad by launching a rugged All-Terrain version the next-generation C-Class wagon.
