The Korean marque extends its partnership to a global leader in quantum computing.
Hyundai Motor Company extends its partnership IonQ, a global leader in quantum computing. They announced the start of a new project to use quantum machine-learning to classify images and identify 3D objects for future mobility. The automaker will use this image classification and 3D object identification to improve its future driving tech, aids, and autonomous driving technology. Machine learning in quantum computers can process huge amounts of data much faster than current systems, and is therefore more accurate.
Peter Chapman (President and CEO of IonQ) stated that “we are excited to extend our existing relationship with Hyundai Motor in order to focus on another important aspect of next-generation mobility.” We expect quantum computers to play a greater role in the development of new transportation solutions, from partnering on electric vehicle battery research to image classification and object detection research to automated driving.
Hyundai and IonQ announced their partnership in the beginning of the year. The goal was to use quantum computers to improve performance, cost and safety of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
IonQ’s quantum computer can now be used to classify 43 types of traffic signs. This is due to a breakthrough in the conversion of pictures into quantum states. IonQ’s machine-learning data will be used by the two companies in Hyundai’s testing environment to create many real-world scenarios. IonQ and Hyundai will work together to develop quantum approaches to 3D object identification. This project extends on existing work to identify road signs by including pedestrians and cyclists. IonQ Aria is the newest quantum computer and could be used to identify objects. This will allow for more efficient processing and lower costs. It also opens the door to safer, smarter mobility in the future. According to industry standards, IonQ Aria is the most powerful quantum computer on the market with 20 algorithmic qubits.
