Hyundai Santa Cruz Truck Likely Getting Inline-Six Diesel Engine

It’s a case of “could”, but it makes a lot sense.

The Genesis SUV has arrived. Along with it, a new engine for the Hyundai Group is also available. Although the inline-six turbodiesel engine found in the GV80 may not be available in the U.S., it is believed that it will be used in a variety of Hyundai vehicles, including the Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck.

According to an Australian CarSales report, the straight-six diesel engine with 278 horsepower (207 kilowatts), and 434 poundfeet (588 Newton meters) of torque could also be used in Hyundai commercial vehicles.

Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s head for R&D, confirmed the news to CarSales this week, during the launch of the GV80 in Korea.

Biermann stated, “This engine…we can have so many uses.” “We also make commercial vehicles, so this engine will still be available for quite some time.”

Although it’s not clear that the Santa Cruz will use the new diesel engine, it is a good indication of what Hyundai would do to make a profit.

Santa Cruz will be built using a ladder-frame chassis. This means that it will require a lot torque to pull the heavy body construction. In this regard, the GV80’s diesel motor should be sufficient.

The Santa Cruz, which was built in the USA, won’t have a diesel engine. Market resistance to diesel should indicate that the Hyundai pickup truck will use a gasoline engine.
