Hyundai’s 690-HP Sports Car Previews Brand’s Future Fuel Cell Strategy

Hydrogen Vision 2040 has been revealed by the company.

Hyundai announced an ambitious plan to make hydrogen a viable and reliable energy source for the automotive sector over the next 20 years. According to the South Korean company, production fuel cell vehicles will be priced at a level comparable to those powered by batteries by 2030. The Vision FK concept car was also revealed by Hyundai at the Hydrogen Wave online conference.

The car is a two-door sports vehicle and is described by the automaker as a 690-horsepower (500 kilowatts) hydrogen powertrain. It’s actually a more complex system that incorporates a fuel cell energy convert with a rear wheel-drive RWD, plug in system. This system can travel over 373 miles (600 km) per one tank of hydrogen. The machine can travel 62 miles an hour (100 km per hour) in just four seconds.

This is all Hyundai has to say about the sports car at the moment. However, it does have other intriguing concepts. For example, the Trailer Drone is a futuristic hydrogen-powered container transport system that can be operated completely autonomously. The modular hydrogen tank system allows for only the right number of tanks to fit each journey. Hyundai claims that a single charge can provide a range greater than 621 miles (1,099 km), which is comparable to existing container transport systems.

Hyundai plans to make all its commercial models available with hydrogen- or battery-powered powertrains by 2028 as part of its fuel cell strategy. For global release, the automaker will create a new fuel cell vehicle commercial vehicle. It expects to sell several hundred thousand units annually.

The company will reveal a new generation of fuel cells in 100-kW and 200kW versions in order to realize its ambitious plans in 2023. It will be 50% cheaper than Hyundai’s FCEV technology, 30% smaller and twice as powerful.
