Brickyard veteran Will Lead the Field to the Green Flag on May 30.
The Indianapolis 500 was one event that was still possible during COVID-ravaged 2020. However, it was delayed for several months and there were no fans in the stands. The 2021 event will see things change. It will return to the traditional Memorial Day Weekend time slot and racing fans will be present in the seats. Danica Patrick will be back at the Brickyard to drive the Indy500 pace car.
Patrick will lead the field to the green for the 105th IndyCar Series race. It is scheduled to take places on Sunday, May 30, 2013. She will drive an Arctic White 2021 Corvette Stingray Convertibln This marks the fifth consecutive year that Chevy’s iconic sports car has been leading the field at Indy. It will also mark the debut of a Corvette convertible for the first time since 2008.
Patrick said, “It is an honor to drive the Corvette Stingray Pace Car at the Indy 500 this year.” It is an even greater honor because of the past year that we all have endured. It will be great to see the fans back at the stands. It’s also a pleasure to be a part again of the NBC broadcast crew for the race.
Patrick’s history with Indy 500 is rich. In 2005, she was a rookie driver and qualified fourth. This gave her the best starting position for any female driver in the history. She was also the first female racer to lead laps at Indy 500. In 2009, she finished third, the highest finish for a female driver.
Chevrolet has an exclusive contract to provide pace cars at the event for the Corvette she’ll drive. An Oldsmobile Aurora was the last non-Chevrolet vehicle that paced the field in 2000. However, 2021 marks the 18th consecutive year that a Corvette has been selected for this honor.
