The replacement will be an all Infiniti model without any ties with Mercedes.
8,101. This is how many Infiniti QX30 compact cross-country crossovers were sold in the United States last year. It represents a huge decrease of 42.5 percent over 2017. The Mercedes GLA on which this model is heavily based sold 9,337 units in just the first four months of 2017. What went wrong with Infiniti’s version?
The QX30 is not a very popular product. These are the words of Infiniti’s new president. Christian Meunier, the new president of Infiniti, spoke to Motor Authority during the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. He said that a successor to the QX30 was in development, but it will not be linked with Mercedes or its GLA. “It will be replaced by an all-Infiniti platform in the future.”
It won’t happen anytime soon, Meunier said. The QX30 isn’t an old product, considering that it was introduced in production form at the Los Angeles Auto Show a little more than three years ago.
When it will eventually make the transition to a new model, the QX30’s direct replacement might benefit from a Variable Compression-Turbocharged (VC-T) gasoline engine as implemented in the QX50. The larger crossover has 268 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and 280 poundfeet (380Nm) of torque from its 2.0 liter unit. However, Meunier stated that the new crossover could have a smaller engine with the same tech, perhaps in a hybrid.
Mercedes spy shots show that the three-pointed star has been busy preparing a second generation GLA. This won’t be Mercedes’ only compact crossover, as the new GLB will arrive in the United States later this year.
