Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations revealed their “new” Lightweight E-Type prototype ahead of its debut at Pebble Beach.

The Lightweight E-Type is a 51-year-old car. It was announced in 1963 by Jaguar that it would build 18 models. Jaguar has completed six of the remaining units, after only twelve were built.

Jaguar had to balance the need to preserve the car’s historical accuracy with the recognition that five decades have passed since its last production.

The stunning prototype of “Car Zero” was built by JLR Special Operations’ skilled craftsmen. It is unmistakably beautiful, despite the challenges. It’s more than skin deep. The model features an aluminum monocoque and aluminum body closures (bonnet/doors/trunk), and a removable aluminum roofing. Connolly leather seats are available, as well as a wood-rimmed steering column, an aluminum gear knob, and machined switchgear.

A 3.8-liter aluminum six-cylinder engine with triple Weber carburetors produces 340 horsepower (253 kW) as well as 280 lb/ft (380Nm). The engine is connected to a 4-speed manual transmission that allows for “rapid acceleration”.

Six cars will be sold as “period competition vehicles” and will all be eligible for FIA homologation to historic motorsport purposes.
