All new Jaguars & Land Rovers will be electrified starting 2020
Jaguar, Land Rover both will launch an electrified version for every model they release starting in 2020. Two new concepts signal the firm’s bold move to electrification. Jaguar unveiled an all-electric Jaguar E-Type and an autonomous electric vehicle concept as part of JLR Tech Fest. This is a look at the future of motoring by 2040.
Dr Ralf Speth, JLR CEO, made the 2020 electrification announcement. He stated that JLR CEO Dr Ralf Speth will announce a range of electrified models across its model range. This includes fully electric, plug in hybrid, and mild hybrid vehicles. The Jaguar I-Pace is our first fully electric SUV.
Jaguar Land Rover is the latest company to pledge to an electric future, with a range fully-electric, battery-powered cars and hybrids as well as plug-in hybrids. This follows Volvo’s announcement earlier in the summer.
Although it is still a concept, Jaguar Land Rover Classic has developed the machine with the production potential in mind. It has replaced the six-cylinder Jaguar engine with batteries, an electrical motor, and all of the control systems. The Series 1.5 E-Type, which was restored in 1968, has been left alone. The suspension, brakes, and driveshafts that transmit the electric-sourced power to its rear wheels are all identical.
It can travel a staggering 170-miles in real-world conditions, and it does so in just 5.5 seconds (0-62 miles per hour) faster than the original. It also weighs 80 kg (176 pounds) more than the classic 60s sportscar.
Tim Hannig, director of JLR Classic, says that the works division could offer the conversion while keeping as much originality as possible. For added provenance, it would be fully reversible. The interior of the E-Type EV concept has electronic instruments and a central touchscreen. However, the original E-Type toggles and clocks can be kept. He said that you would only need to replace the rev counter with an electronic battery meter.
Jaguar will offer customers the classic electric retro-conversion if there is enough demand. Although it won’t come cheap and will not be affordable for all, there’s no better way to make sure you have the Jag you love until 2040.
Jaguar also has the Future-Type concept. This autonomous electric-driven insight into Jaguar’s vision of motoring in 2040 is presented by Jaguar. The three-seat, narrow city car features 2+1 seating and a full range infotainment screens. There is also a Sayer steering wheel that can be removed and used as an artificial intelligence virtual assistant.
Jaguar suggests future owners might buy the steering wheel only, and not the car. This would give them access to a fleet autonomous Future-Types they could call up on-demand’. To make money, owners could send their Future-Types away to help them earn extra income through car-sharing.
The Future-Type is an autonomous car that can be connected to other cars. However, Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director, is keen to emphasize that it is not fully self-driving. Customers tell us that Jaguars make them feel special. We’ve been exploring how to keep that emotional connection with the Future-Type in a future where people might not choose to own a vehicle or when a Jaguar can be autonomously rented.
Our research suggests that luxury and premium experiences will continue to be available in a future age where car sharing and on-demand services are common. While people will continue to want to travel in style, comfort, and the rise of car sharing increases the chance for people to experience the Jaguar’s unique features, even if it is not their choice,
