Jay Leno Drives New Bullitt Mustang, Chased by Original Bullitt Mustang

As he takes to the roads in both cars, you can watch and listen.

Ford has just unveiled the 2019 Mustang Bullitt. Jay Leno is seen taking fast laps in both. We’re not surprised by the lack of snow and green grass in the clip. It was clearly shot at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan proving grounds. It’s a great thing to be a famous and wealthy car guy.

Although the video does not necessarily reveal anything new, it isn’t likely to change our knowledge about Ford’s Mustang or the original. Leno initially climbs into the passenger seat, but then the clip jumps to Leno behind the wheel and chatting with Sean Kiernan, the car’s owner. His father bought the original Bullitt in 1974. He used it daily for many years. Cool fact: The prior owner was Frank, a New Jersey police detective. You’ll be able to see the movie in its entirety, not just the chase scene.

Steve McQueen attempted to purchase the car from the Kiernans but was denied twice. After accumulating over 65,000 miles, the car was left parked in 1981. It remained there until it was finally lost to time.

Sean’s father died in 2014. He decided to restore the car to its original condition and preserve it as it was during its time as the Kiernan daily drive. Evidently, there were other people who knew about the car. This culminated in the big reveal that just happened – which included McQueen’s granddaughter Molly.

Although Leno’s video doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, it gives us an opportunity to see both cars in action. This would be enough to be appreciated, but when you consider that this could be the most iconic movie car ever – with a fascinating story behind it – it makes the clip even more special.
