Jay Leno Is In Awe Of Koenigsegg Regera After Taking A Drive

The Agera RS can also be found in the garage.

Jay Leno invites Christian von Koenigsegg to his garage to talk about the Swedish automaker’s Agera RSS and Regera. After a lengthy discussion about the machines, the comedian in denim jumps behind the Regera’s wheel. The high-tech hypercar impressed him greatly.

Koenigsegg has a unique position in hypercar development because it develops the majority of its components in-house. The company designs the engine and transmission, and even makes its own carbon fiber wheels. They also dive into Regera’s Koenigsegg direct drive single-speed gearbox. A super-sophisticated torque converter is basically a device that takes the output of the combustion engine and directs it to a rear differential.

Von Koenigsegg is proud of Regera’s electric drive. This tech allows for thinner cables to allow for smaller inverters and allows production cars to run at 800V. The pipe in the back, which looks like an engine exhaust, is actually the outlet for hot water from the cooling of the electrical inverters.

Leno describes driving as “eerie” once he is behind the wheel. The novel gearbox ensures that there is never a dull moment and there are no gears to change. It is relentless. Leno describes the result as a “game-changer.”

Koenigsegg recently finished production of the Agera RS , and is still building the Regera’s 80-unit assembly. In this video von Koenigsegg claims that five cars have been built and twenty are currently in production. The company teases its next creation, which is rumored to be called Ragnarok. It is expected to produce 1,440 horsepower (1.074 kilowatts) and will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.
