Jeep will soon offer three full-size SUVs for its customers by the end of next year.
Auto Express quoted Mike Manley from FCA/Jeep, who confirmed that 4×4 enthusiasts can expect not one but two new Jeep SUVs. Jeep will make another three-row SUV in addition to the highly anticipated Wagoneer. This SUV will be between the Grand Cherokee, and the Wagoneer.
Although we don’t yet know much, there are a few things we know. One, it won’t be sharing its name with Grand Cherokee, despite likely sharing the majority of the platform and powertrain components. The new Jeep family of large SUVs – Grand Cherokee, the new Wagoneer, and this new model – will all have hybrid drivetrains. However, they will retain the same attributes that made Grand Cherokee vehicles so beloved by Jeep customers.
Manley seems to have a great understanding of the needs and wants of those Jeep enthusiasts. He said, “It’s almost like I could dramatically change Wrangler’s appearance. I would be crucified!” The Grand Cherokee is loved by its customers because of its rear-wheel drive, well-placed stance and perfect dimensions. The Grand Cherokee’s winning formula will not change despite the addition of larger stablemates or a hybrid drivetrain.
We are happy Jeep has brought back the Wagoneer nameplate, and we wonder what other names they could find in their corporate history. Manley’s hesitation to associate the new three row model with the Grand Cherokee makes it impossible for him to call himself the Grand Cherokee Chief. However, it is possible that the Wagoneer will be the in-between model, while the Grand Wagoneer could be the most luxurious and top-of the-line SUV. While time will tell, one thing is certain: Jeep is experiencing a lot of growth right now.
