Two-wheelbase lengths are possible
New spy photos have shown Jeep’s larger SUV under development. An inside source told Motor1.com this is a preview for what we can expect from the new Wagoneer.
The insider claims that the design of the SUV is still in development. It could look different from the test mule. The model will be available in two lengths of wheelbase. This model will most likely be the Wagoneer. The longer version will bear the Grand Wagoneer moniker. Both will be made of heavy aluminum to reduce their weight. The production versions will be available in 2020.
Despite the camouflage, these photos show a striking resemblance with drawings from a 2017 Jeep design trademark application. The headlights on both models are narrow and wrap around with a separate lamp beneath. Each model’s front fascia has a cut below the grille. Although there is a clear kinship to the Grand Cherokee model, the differences are significant enough to know that it is something else.
Camouflage is better at concealing the profile (above), however this angle gives the best view of the vehicle’s dimensions. However, the similarities to the trademark are more apparent at the rear (below). They share a wraparound hatchback glass and narrow, horizontally-set taillights. These spy shots and design drawings show almost identical arrangements of the rectangular exhaust outlets and lower reflectors.
This test mule appears to borrow some design cues from the Jeep Yuntu concept (gallery down). This is especially apparent in the narrow strip of headlights. Due to the size of the vehicle, it is possible that both wheelsbase lengths can hold three rows of seats. According to earlier reports, the Grand Wagoneer might be more expensive than the smaller model. As a way to make Jeep more competitive with Land Rover’s most luxurious off-roaders, the prices for the large SUV could be up to $140,000.
