Jeep Wrangler With 200-HP Turbodiesel Climbs into Europe

In Europe, the Wrangler can only be ordered with an 8-speed automatic.

The JL generation Jeep Wrangler has just begun to reach dealers in the United States. Now, the company is outlining specifications for the European version which will arrive in September. While the Euro-spec Wrangler will be identical to its North American counterpart, there are some powertrain modifications. The most significant change is that buyers in the Pond can now get a turbodiesel four cylinder engine with a 2.2-liter displacement, as well as a gas-powered 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder. Only the Middle East and Africa are able to purchase the 3.6-liter V6.

The diesel mill produces 200 horsepower (149 Kilowatts) as well as 332 pound-feet (450 Newton-meters). This powerplant is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed manual is not available.

Even though the Wrangler is powered by diesel, it can still go off-road. Standard equipment for the Sport and Sahara trims is Jeep’s Command-Trac. This two-speed transmission case has 3.73-ratio rear wheels, as opposed to 3.45-ratio for gas-powered models. This part allows drivers to switch between rear-wheel or four-wheel drive at speeds up to 45 mph. For sticky situations, there’s a four-wheel low range. Drivers can also opt for a Trac-Lok rear differential with limited slip to give them more traction on slippery surfaces.

The Rubicon model comes with the Rock-Trac system, which features a two-speed transmission case, Dana 44 axles and electronic sway bar disconnect. Both axles on the diesel have a 3.73 ratio instead of the 4.10 ratio found in the gasoline-powered versions.

For those who want a more luxurious off-road-ready SUV, the Rubicon trim is available in Europe with an optional Overland package. It features 18-inch wheels, LED lighting, and body-color parts such as the grille or spare tire cover. Leather upholstery is available inside.
