Kia recalls 71K Sportages due to a wire harness engine fire danger

The recall is scheduled to start on November 28.

Kia is recalling certain Sportsage vehicles produced between 2008 and 2009. These vehicles were manufactured between August 9, 2007, and May 13, 2009. South Korean manufacturer is concerned that the wire harness cover of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, (HECU), may not be properly sealed. This could allow water to enter the circuit board.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA), water contaminated by salt, such as from snow melt in winter or spring, can cause corrosion of wire harness connector pins and short circuiting. This can increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

Kia will notify affected owners to take their vehicles to the nearest dealer starting November 28th. After inspecting the connector pins for corrosion, dealers will replace the cover. If the details become corroded the dealer will replace both the entire HECU assembly as well as the cover. The operation will be performed without charge, it is obvious.

Customers can manually verify if their vehicle will be affected by the recall by entering their VIN numbers .
