The end of the year, or early 2019, should be the best time to start sales.
The United States is set to see 2018 as a great year for diesel cars. Slowly recovering from the dieselgate, the new diesel segment will include the first-ever Ford F-150 Diesel, the diesel-powered BMW BMW 540d and the new Chevrolet Silverado. A new report also suggests a diesel version for Kia’s Sorento SUV.
Car and Driver is quoting Orthhedrick, the company’s vice president for product planning. He explained during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, that the South Korean brand was currently working with the EPA in collaboration to certify the compression ignition Sorento and make it ready for a market launch.
If all goes according to plan, sales should begin in the last quarter of 2018. Hedrick pointed out that the agency’s certification was stricter than ever, which could delay the sales process. Kia will launch the model within the first month of next year.
It’s unclear at this time which diesel engine will power Sorento’s U.S.-spec diesel. However, it is safe to assume that it will be the 2.2-liter CRDi inline-four CRDi which is available on the European market. It will have 197 horsepower (147kilowatts) as well as 325 pound-feet (405 Newton-meters), of torque and it will be placed between the 2.4-liter V6 gasoline options.
Hedrick has provided preliminary numbers that are still unofficial and predict 30 MPG for highway use and a high towing capability.
The updated Euro-spec Sorento was unveiled by Kia in September 2013. It featured an improved version of its 2.2-liter diesel engine. It is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the six-speed manual. It reduces CO2 emissions by 159 grams per km. You can also get a six-speed manual.
