Without this build, Kia would have crushed pre-production Stinger.
The Kia Stinger GT420 The British division of the brand created a special, more powerful, track-only performance sedan. The power output is 422 horsepower (315 Kilowatts) or 413 pound-feet (560 Nm) from the stock 365 HP (272 kW) or 376 lb-376 ft (510Nm) respectively.
The expertise of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre, Russelsheim, Germany contributed to the improvement of the engine’s output. These tweaks included new spark plugs, K&N air filters, and Milltek Sport quad exit exhaust without catalytic converters. The gearbox is more capable of enduring long track work thanks to a larger automatic transmission cooler.
Kia raised the camber angle to improve handling on the track and fitted 19-inch Pirelli Trofeo R tires. Standard dampers remain at the corners, but Eibach Pro lowering springs have been installed and thicker anti-roll bars added. The standard stoppers in the back are located at the rear. However, the Brembo brakes of six pistons in the front assist in slowing down.
The interior of the Stinger GT420 is being used by Kia for track work. To reduce weight, the Kia Press Garage in Chippenham (England) removed the rear bumper beam as well as some sound-deadening foam. The sunroof was replaced by a steel panel and the power mechanism. For safety, the car received a roll cage and additional chassis bars to increase stiffness. This one-off car weighs in at 331 pounds (150 kg) less than the Stinger GT road-going model.
The story of this particular Stinger is interesting. It was the first preproduction example to arrive in Britain and appeared on Top Gear, The Grand Tour. The rules forbid the registration of the sedan on the roads after it has completed its task. This would normally have meant that the car needed to be taken to the crusher. Kia Motors UK had another idea and decided not to take the Stinger. This is what led to the creation of the GT420.
