Lada announced the next-generation Niva a month ago. It will be available in 2024 on a new platform and with new technologies. It’s safe to assume that the off-roader won’t get a diesel engine, even with the Renault-sourced architecture. However, this doesn’t mean that an oil-burning Niva isn’t possible. It comes from Russia.
The PrivetTachka YouTube shows the amazing work of a Niva using a transplanted BMW diesel engine. The video’s title suggests a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 engine, but the crossover is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel that produces approximately 250 horsepower. It’s certainly more powerful than any Niva, but it’s not what we expected.
We must admire the modifications that were made to the vehicle to accommodate the four-cylinder engine. The suspension has been significantly revised and the engine bay has been modified to fit the larger and heavier engine. An automatic gearbox from the 3 Series transfers power to the rear wheels.
Although the Niva’s performance numbers aren’t as impressive as the X5M, it is still quite powerful. It’s quite quick off the line, with a top speed of 0-62 miles per an hour and acceleration times of 6.0 seconds. It’s also great for drifting as you can see from the video.
BMW models aren’t the only ones that have engine and transmission components. Bavarian brands have provided the interior with an infotainment system and a two-zone climate control. This is something that no Niva driver has experienced before. For optimal traction, the 20-inch wheels are not sourced from a BMW. They have studded winter tires.
