Land Rover Defender Drag Race: V8 against EV and LS Swap

The three cars are all heavy and have lots of power.

The Defender has been admittedly not designed for drag racing. Land Rover’s most rugged off-roader has been around for years. Carwow thought it would be fun drag racing three Defenders with different philosophy under the hood.

This is a truly bizarre drag race. Although there are three different powertrains available, the horsepower figures alone show that all three can compete. There are three options: a new Defender V8, a Defender equipped with a Tesla electrical powertrain and a modified Defender that has had an engine swap. Let’s look at the numbers first.

The new Defender V8 is the only stock car in the race. It has a 5.0-liter supercharged motor under the hood that generates a peak output 525 horsepower (386 Kilowatts) as well as 461 pound-feet (625 Newton meters) of torque. Surprisingly it is the largest of the three, weighing in at 5,448 pounds (2.471 kilograms). It is also the strongest Defender in drag racing.

The Tesla-powered Defender is powered by an electric powertrain that produces 500 HP (368 kW) with 498 lb-ft (675Nm) of instant twist. It is heavier than the Defender V8 at 4,255 pounds (1,930kg).

The Defender also has a V8-powered engine, but it is not Land Rover-sourced. The so-called Arkonik Defender has a 6.2-liter V8 engine. This means that it sends 436 hp (321 kW), and 350 lbf (475 Nm) all four wheels. At 4,100 lbs (1.860 kg), it is the lightest of all three competitors.

This is a thrilling race, believe it or not. Mat Watson, the host of the show admits that this is one the most exciting drag races he has ever seen. We won’t spoil the results but we will mention that you might be very surprised at the results.
