There are many reasons to believe this is based upon the upcoming model.
Lego has never been known to leak information about upcoming cars. However, it appears that the brick company is waking up on the wrong side by revealing a new Lego Technic: the 2020 Land Rover Defender.
According to the Lego news site the Brothers Brick, this unreleased brick set was found to be a “replica” of the iconic utility vehicle. Based on spy photos of the Defender 90 we have seen previously, there are many reasons to believe the Technic set is based upon the upcoming model.
Officially Revealed
Now, admit it. It is hard to deny the obvious similarities between the wrapped prototype, and the Lego Technic set. Start with the grille, and then the badge in the bar that is perfectly aligned. As well as the wheel designs, the roofline as well as squared-off nose and roofline are identical.
Our only concern is the absence of a functioning winch at the front, and the different round headlights from the prototype. Other than that, the hypothesis works perfectly.
For a better comparison, here’s a clearer image of the Lego Defender.
The Land Rover Defender, according to Lego Technic, has 2,573 Lego pieces. It will have the working winch at its front and a functioning steering mechanism, four speed sequential gearbox, three differentials and an independent suspension. It is 8.6 inches (22 cm) high, 16.5 inch (42 centimeters), long and 7.8 inch (20 centimeters wide). The Lego Defender replica is yet to be released. However, The Brothers Brick stated that the price would be around PS159.99 in the U.K. and around $204 at current exchange rates.
According to reports, the Lego Technic Defender will be unveiled in October. However, the real Land Rover Defender’s launch date has been set for September.
