Lego Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTI must be made

It’s still far from being finished before you can display your tiny hot hatch and build the kit.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI was the original hot hatch. Its perfect blend of affordability, performance and utility make it an iconic vehicle. Even the most recent MK1 GTIs are over 30 years old and it is becoming harder to find a quality one. However, you might soon be able park one on your desk. Lego Ideas creator is seeking support to help the toy brick company bring this cute little model to production.

Although the design is a good representation of the GTI’s style, the crease at the shoulder is too prominent on this model. The builder is very attentive to the details. The grille has the correct GTI emblem and the rear is decorated with custom decals. It’s easy to visualize the car being driven around your desk, and then imagine tight corners.

It is a feat of engineering to construct the interior. You can find stickers that replicate the GTI’s center stack and steering wheel. We love the striped seats, but it would be great if Lego bricks could recreate the plaid seats of the original vehicle.

The creator claims that the GTI model uses 1,278 parts. The photo shows it roughly scaled with Lego’s 1,167-piece VW Beetle model. They would look great together on a bookshelf.

At the time of writing, the GTI had 1,339 supporters for the 10,000 Lego Ideas needs before the company’s review panel considers putting a production kit into production. There are still 589 days for the project to reach this milestone. That means there is still time to get another 8,661 votes.

A successful Lego Ideas campaign was responsible for the Caterham620R kit which recently hit toy stores shelves. Lego pays a royalty for each set sold.
