Lincoln Continental officially dead at the hands of Lincoln SUVs

The Lincoln luxury sedan has been discontinued. The Lincoln luxury SUV is here to stay.

In 2020, the Lincoln Continental sedan will be the last on the road. Production will cease permanently by the end. A report in Automotive News states that the automaker will end production of its last luxury car and focus on SUVs and crossovers.

It’s not surprising that the Continental is the company’s most-sold vehicle. Lincoln sold 1,845 new Continentals in 2019, beating only the MKT three-row crossover and its ugly-duckling counterpart. The automaker sold almost three times as many Navigation SUVs than the most expensive Lincoln sedan.

Lincoln’s lineup will be devoid of sedans after the Continental’s departure and the confirmed death MKZ. The company will also invest in a luxury EV crossover and will add the small Corsair to its lineup. Those plans were to have the model share some bones with the Rivian R1S. It will instead ride on a Lincoln-specific platform.

The Continental isn’t the only victim of a world obsessed by high-riding sport-utes. Ford will offer the Mustang only in its 2021 lineup, which otherwise includes trucks and SUVs. Buick will only sell SUVs for 2021 like Lincoln. The Regal was also cut last year. The Mercedes-Benz SL, SLC roadsters and the Lexus GS were also cancelled.

This news about the death of the Continental and the Continental Coach Door variant is a consolation that Lincoln’s SUV lineup has never been better, thanks to the Corsair and Aviator. Let’s update the Nautilus.
