Is the Continental or Lincoln an option?
Lincoln posted an interesting photo to its social media channels this morning. Although the small photo appears unassuming, it features a pair of old-fashioned door handles. The door handles on this picture are identical to the original 1960’s Lincoln Continental. We believe there is a deeper meaning. The one with the suicide doors.
Lincoln calls them “center-opening door” in the Facebook post. But the point is that it seems Lincoln is teasing a new suicide option. This could be the future for the flagship sedan of the automaker. Lincoln makes a special reference to this posh cruiser in its post about the Lincoln. Continental This is the 1960s version of the iconic car, not its modern-day equivalent. We are the first to suggest that a new Continental with suicide-doors would be a good idea. Very It is indeed cool.
It doesn’t look likely to us. America’s sedan sales are falling faster than Niagara Falls. Ford, which owns Lincoln, is dropping sedan sales in North America. Despite its curb appeal and low sales of new Continentals, it’s not too surprising. Rumours suggest that it could be out of business by 2020.
However, that doesn’t mean they won’t be able to find a home in Lincoln’s SUV family. The new Aviator could be a candidate for the center-opening arrangement. It’s also possible that such an arrangement could facilitate ingress/egress for a family car. To mitigate the suicide aspect, we believe safety measures will be put in place. We know that opening a rear-hinged doors at high speed can lead to unwelcome consequences. This is why the nickname “Unflattering” was given. Rolls-Royce can do it without any problems, but so can Lincoln.
