According to the automaker, its electric motortrain will produce a distinct sound.
For car enthusiasts, sound is an integral part of motoring. Many consider the sound to be the heartbeat of the vehicle. A quiet electric vehicle can be used to commute to work and back. However, for a company like Maserati going electric means removing the sounds that so many people love.
This is a risky proposition for an Italian automaker that is in the business to build cars that excite the spirit. However, Maserati has developed a unique noise for its electric vehicles. The GranTurismo, GranCabrio and GranCabrio will all be electrified by 2021. Special attention is being paid to the “music”, which these electric Maserati powertrains are expected to make. EVs are almost silent – but not completely.
While we suspect that many of you are scowling at this, Maserati has provided the video at the end of the article to show us what the new music sounds like. Maserati seems to be working to amplify the whine and whistle that all electric motors make. This clip is quite unique. It has a jet fighter-like feel and it’s certainly an interesting soundtrack. It’s and not silent, that’s one thing certain.
Maserati’s electric transformation will be entirely done in-house. The automaker is responsible for all aspects of research and development. Maserati has released a press release that states some prototypes have been equipped with the new electric powertrain. Testing is ongoing. The next GranTurismo EV will arrive in 2021. However, if you don’t want a car that sounds like an F35 spooling up Maserati has promised to never make it fully electric.
