Local Motors unveiled the new 3D-printed LM3D Swim at SEMA.
Kevin Lo, a Local Motors community member, designed the LM3D swim. It was chosen as the winner in July’s Project Redacted challenge. The car was approved by the Local Motors community and a panel of judges that included Jay Leno, SEMA Vice President for Vehicle Technology John Waraniak.
Local Motors claims that the software developed by Siemens allowed them to develop the car quickly, despite the fact that the winning entry was only selected a few months ago. Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), which supplied the materials for the body of LM3D swim, also supported the company.
Local Motors has begun intensive testing and development that will result in homologated cars made using digital manufacturing techniques including 3D printing. They also stated that they plan to release several new models within the LM3D series in 2016, while simultaneously pursuing federal crash testing, safety certifications, and other related matters.
The models will be available for pre-order starting at $53,000 if everything goes according to plan. These models will be produced in the company’s microfactory in Knoxville in Tennessee, in early 2017.
