Lotus Evija Reduces Cosworth V8 F1 Engine Sound

Is the sound worth a remix?

The Lotus Evija will finally arrive. It makes a remixed version the Lotus Type 49’s Cosworth DVFV engine’s exhaust note. The sound can be heard in the embedded video, but unfortunately it is not as natural as the real thing.

Patrick Patrikios, a Welsh producer who has worked with Sia and Britney Spears, created the sound. The goal of this project was to create a sound that instantly evokes Lotus. This led to the Type 49 Formula One car with its iconic engine.

In 1967, the Cosworth DFV was introduced to competition. Jim Clark won Lotus’ first race with the engine.

The powerplant was adopted by other teams, and the DFV became practically the default mill in F1. In 1969 and 1973, DFV powered cars won every F1 race.

Patrikios stated, “There’s a purity about that V8, a raw edge that stirs something inside your soul, just as the best songs,”

Patrikios did more than just give the Evija a note from the DFV. However, this could have been a good idea. Instead, he did digital filtering and slowed down his combustion engine.

It produces a distortion and electronic hum. It is reminiscent of the sound you get when you plug in a stereo wrongly and get feedback through the speakers. The mechanical whine from the DFV has been completely obliterated.

The Evija should debut in the first half 2021. Lotus was forced to postpone the launch of the vehicle from its original date in late 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The electric hypercar is claimed to have a maximum output of over 2,000 horsepower (1.491 kilowatts). It is expected to reach speeds of 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 3 seconds, and 186 mph (390 kph), in just 9 seconds.
