Many Van Drivers Are at Risk with Heavy Loads

Volkswagen has released some alarming statistics in a new study.

Recent research shows that van drivers don’t leave enough space to stop safely. More than half of commercial vehicle drivers don’t know the true consequences of hauling heavy loads.

A survey of van drivers conducted by Volkswagen commercial vehicles last year found that van drivers often carry up to half a ton each day. A heavy payload can cause a reduction in braking distances of up to 36%, which is equivalent to five meters (16.4 feet more) at 60 mph (97 km/h).

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles conducted a series test at the MIRA Proving grounds in the U.K. with its range vans carrying different payloads, ranging from empty up to 500 kg (1,102lbs), driving at 30 mph (48 km/h) and 60 (97 km/h).

Tests showed that at 30 MPH (48 KPH), the braking distance increased by a third (33%), which is an additional two meters (6.5ft) of distance. The braking distance increased by 19% at 60 mph (97 km/h), or five meters (16.4ft).

According to the brand’s survey, more than half of van drivers could not determine how long it would take to stop a fully loaded van. Only 17 percent could identify the Highway Code’s recommended stopping distance of 30 mph (48 km/h).

“Our Working With You promise does not just mean building safe vans and supporting their owners to keep them in great condition. We also take our responsibilities towards van drivers seriously, and this research highlights a need for knowledge that could prove fatal,” stated Carl zu Dohna Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The Highway Code’s recommended speed limits don’t account for the many loads van drivers haul. Our research reveals a vital safety message van drivers could benefit from.

Our customers are plumbers, landscape gardeners, or construction workers. They often carry half a ton of gear and must be aware that they need to modify their driving style in order to avoid a costly and possibly serious accident.

Matthew Avery, Thatcham Research Director of Research, said: “This is a very important message from a brand that is leading the way in van safety.” We encourage van drivers to secure their loads, as heavy objects in the back can affect stability and stopping distance.

“This message comes after 2017’s announcement by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles that all new Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles vans will be equipped with standard-fit Autonomous Emergency Braking, a first for van makers.”
