Maserati recalls Ghiblis and Quattroportes locking rear wheels

This flaw could also cause increased noise or leakage of differential fluid.

Maserati will recall 326 2017 Ghibli or 2017 Qattroporte vehicles in the United States to fix a problem that could lead to rear wheels locking up. This issue is specifically affected by vehicles produced between July 1, 2016 and October 12, 2016. These vehicles may not have the rear differential pinion nuts tightened properly. The pinion gear can bind or lock the wheels if it is not tightened properly. Customers may also experience increased noise, vibration and harshness in their cabins. Another sign of an issue is a differential fluid leakage at the pinion seal.

Maserati noticed the issue for the first time on September 1, 2016. Workers at Grugliasco’s factory, Italy noticed an increase in rear differential noise during pre-delivery testing. The components were returned to GKN in the United States by the company. GKN began inspecting the parts. Both the pinion flange nuts and the bolts that held them together at GKN’s factory were found to have incorrect torque. Maserati received 948 of the defective assemblies from the business. The models were stopped by the Italian automaker. Six of the models were found in the factory yard, and 942 were shipped to dealers. This included 326 that had been estimated to be on the road with customers.

Dealers will inspect the torque on the rear differential unit’s pinion nut, and replace the whole assembly if necessary to fix the problem. Maserati will mail the affected customers in the next 30 days. Maserati recalls 13,092 units from the 2014 Quattroporte & Ghibli earlier this season due to driver confusion regarding the eight-speed automatic transmission switcher. Customers might not be able to tell if their models are in Park as the gearshift doesn’t move to a different location when it moves through the gears. This was a concern for Maserati. To fix the problem, the automaker is working on a software update.
