Mazda Details Inline-Six 3.0-Liter Gasoline And 3.3-Liter Diesel Engin

Both will be able to benefit from mild hybrid tech and a new eight speed automatic.

Mazda’s longitudinal layout platform known as “Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture” is what makes the CX-60 more than an SUV. Why is this important? These long-rumored inline-6 engines are finally coming to fruition. In a press release, Zoom-Zoom shared preliminary information about the CX-60 hybrid production model.

The 3.0-liter eSkyactiv X engine promises “smooth acceleration” and “an engaging sound.” Mazda claims that it is just as efficient as the four-pot engine due to its improved lean combustion technology. This engine is still naturally aspirated, and its higher capacity allows it to push more air without the need for turbocharging.

The 3.3-liter eSkyactiv D is an evolution of the 2.2-liter unit. It offers a “higher speed range at lean burn.” Engineers have created egg-shaped combustion chambers that divide the air-fuel mixture between two parts of the piston bowl. This allows them to make better use the surplus air. This improves combustion and reduces NOx emissions at higher speeds. This increases the lean-burn area, which reduces unburned residue to a minimum.

Although the inline-six diesel engine is larger than its four-pot counterpart physically, the simple structure of the vehicle offsets any weight penalty. Mazda even mentions that it is about the same weight as a regular four pot diesel. The oil-burner also benefits from “M HybridBoost”, which is similar to the gasoline mill. It’s basically a mild-hybrid 48V setup that reduces fuel consumption and emissions, as well as supporting the combustion engine when it is running from a stand start.

The inline-six engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission were designed to work together. It does not have a torque converter. It does not use a hydraulic converter and instead uses a multi-plate clutch to make faster and more smoother gear changes. Mazda has reduced the size of the transmission tunnel to make it smaller, which allows for better driving position and more room in the pedal box.

Mazda’s SUV assault is only beginning with the CX-60. The CX-60 will be followed by the CX-70, which has a wider body for the United States. A larger three-row CX-80 model, which is also referred to as CX-80, is expected to arrive in Europe. Meanwhile, the CX-90, with a wider body, is set to arrive in the USA. The new platform will be used by all four models, and we hope to see it on the next Mazda6 sedan.
