Mazda: Mazda Can Build A Powerful Engine for a Hot 3 Hatch. But We Won’t

Mazda, why do you tease us? Why!

Mazda is a well-respected brand that has received a lot of praise in the past few years. The company’s new design language, interior fit, finish, and performance have been praised by many. However, the Japanese automaker has not yet introduced a Mazdaspeed model. Hiroyuki Masumoto, Mazda’s global head of product planning and development, stated that while Mazda can build an engine that is powerful enough to power the Mazda3 but they don’t plan to.

Mazdaspeed fans are disappointed by the news. They want the company to target the VW Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R hot-hatch segments. Customers will instead have to rely upon the aftermarket for greater power and performance. Mazda’s Mazdaspeed3 was introduced twelve years ago. However, it wasn’t around long and was discontinued after the 2013 model year.

Mazda: Mazda Can Build A Powerful Engine for a Hot 3 Hatch. But We Won't

According to the publication, Mazda enthusiasts from Australia to the UK expressed a desire for their employer to revive a hot-hatch model. The company does not intend to make it. Mazda is much smaller than Honda and VW, so this could be a tactic to keep keyboard speculators away. It is not financially smart to invest in a niche performance vehicle while the company invests in new engine technologies like its SkyActivX engine and also develops hybrids.

We would love to see Mazda bring back the Mazdaspeed nameplate in a new model. Who wouldn’t want to see Mazda resurrect the Mazdaspeed nameplate for a new model? However, the company insists that it has no plans to change its mind. The company isn’t going to change its mind, however. Crossovers are gaining popularity and Hatchbacks aren’t getting the same love as they once did. Perhaps a Mazdaspeed CX-3 might be better.
