Mazda Miata gets a major update, 182-HP engine in Japan

Telescoping steering wheels are also available.

Rumours that Mazda was developing an MX-5 Miata, were true. Japan’s Car Watch was able to test drive the prototype of the hugely upgraded roadster. The publication also revealed all details. The 2.0-liter four cylinder produces 182 horsepower at 7,000 RPM, rather than the current 155 hp at 6600 RPM. The torque is slightly higher at 151 pound-feet (205 Newton meters) from the current model, which has 148 lbft (201 Nm).

Mazda has overhauled its powertrain to achieve this significant power boost. The new pistons are 0.95 ounces (27g) lighter and the connecting rods are 1.4 ounces (41.1 grams) smaller. The Miata’s engine is larger in diameter, has bigger exhaust valves and has wider exhaust pipes to improve airflow. These improvements allowed the redline to rise from 6,800 rpm in the old roadster to 7,500. Car Watch claims that the tweaks not only increase power but also lower thermal efficiency and emissions. The new parts include a dual-mass flywheel.

The engine is the heartbeat of a sports car but it is not all that important. Mazda engineers have installed softer suspension bushings in the back to improve steering feel. The Miata’s first telescoping steering column is now available inside the cabin. According to Car Watch It has a 1.2 inch (30 millimeters), adjustable tilt function, and can move 1.7 inches (42mm).

The Car Watch story photos don’t show any significant styling changes to the Miata. It does mention minor styling tweaks such as a caramel brown top and tan leather interior.

Here’s the bad news. Motor1.com reached Mazda’s representatives in America to inquire about the changes. The automaker replied that they do not comment on speculations or future products not yet announced for their market.

Mazda seems unlikely to invest so much in the Miata’s upgrade and not bring the changes over here. The automaker has not yet revealed when it might arrive.
