It is almost as light and compact as the original Miata NA.
The Japanese magazine claims that the JDM-only MX-5990S has Rays alloy wheels, which reduce the weight to 3.2 kg (7 lbs), and Brembo calipers/rotors at its front axle. The calipers have been repainted in black and feature “Brembo” letters in light blue. Mazda has fitted the small roadster with a soft top in navy blue, which is matched by the interior air vent surrounds. For a simpler setup, the cabin does not include the touch screen of the infotainment systems and instead features special floor mats in blue with the “Roadster” lettering.
The 990S also has additional modifications, including a new tune for the springs and dampers. Mazda engineers modified the electric power steering system and removed sound-deadening materials from the dashboard. Although engineers claim it is technically possible, a similar version with the 2.0-liter engine will not be on the horizon. Shigeki Saito, chief development officer for 990S, stated that “horsepower is not proportional to fun, but lightness or fun are proportional.” You will become heavier if you increase horsepower. This is because you must strengthen the body. The car that is lighter, the more enjoyable it is. This roadster is great if you like driving.
Mazda’s local website has not yet officially announced the 990S, but it was unveiled at an event in Japan. It’s a special edition car, but it won’t come in small quantities because Mazda wants it to be enjoyed “by as many people as possible.” It will be available in the Land of the Rising Sun by the end of the year. Pricing details will be revealed closer to the launch.
