It is unlikely that the next generation will be released before 2024.

Mazda, unlike most automakers, is taking a different approach to embracing EVs. Mazda recently unveiled a new rear-wheel drive platform that will bring in two inline-six gasoline engines and a diesel engine. It is also one of the few car manufacturers that still sells cars with naturally aspirated powertrains. It sees a future in oil-burners in certain parts of the globe.

The MX-5 is still a viable roadster, despite the constant pressure from regulators to reduce fleet emissions. Autocar spoke to Mazda’s European head of product development, engineering and communications. He assured fans that the Miata would remain a Miata despite constant pressures from regulators to reduce fleet emissions. It looks like this car will be with us forever, given its size, concept, and combustion engine.

He acknowledged that there will be a time when the MX-5 will need to be electrified, but he said that he wanted to keep the original concept. Joachim Kunz stated that the MX-5 will not be switching to an existing platform as used by other cars or SUVs, since this would result in the loss of RWD. He said that most of the development work was done in Japan, as the sports car is the “baby of the headquarters.”

Kunz said that although an exact date for the replacement of the ND generation was not available, he suggested that it wouldn’t be happening in the near future. “Having one generation for ten years is not a problem.” The MX-5 is a distinct vehicle in the company’s lineup that sits apart from the main vehicles. Given that the current car was launched back in 2014, it is unlikely that the NE model will be released before 2024.

The MX-5’s formula will remain the same when it arrives. According to a spokesperson for the company, “Mazda” is trying to electrify MX-5 Miata to make it more affordable. This will increase weight and cause packaging problems. We recommend a hybrid setup or a 48V mild hybrid system.

Whatever the reason, the NE-gen model could end up being heavier than the current car. It weighs in at 2,182 pounds (990 kgs) in JDM-only 990S.
