These two campaigns will affect 104,779 vehicles in America.
Two recalls have been issued by Mazda for the RX-8 in America. Due to a problem with fuel pump, the larger recall affects 69 447 examples of RX-8 performance cars from 2004 through 2008. Due to a problem with the ball joints, the smaller issue affects 35,332 vehicles from the 2004 model year.
Units of the RX-8 affected by fuel pump problems include units made between April 10, 2003 and February 18, 2008. An inspection by the company revealed that one of the main pumps’ pipes may have cracked due to a crack in a weld. The problem can be exacerbated by continued exposure to heat from exhaust and engine. This can eventually lead to a gas leakage. This issue does not affect the other fuel pump pipes.
Mazda’s defect chronology states that the company began investigating this issue in November 22, 2007. RX-8s manufactured after February 27, 2008 were fitted with a thicker part to stop cracking. This was the first time that the company received a field report from the U.S. regarding this issue. It happened during the repair and replacement of another fuel-pump-related recall. The automaker decided to run this campaign.
Mazda will notify owners and dealers will replace the fuel filter kit with a better component.
Examples of the RX-8 manufactured between April 10, 2003 and May 6, 2004, are affected by this suspension problem. The ball joint socket can crack if the lower control arms of the front suspension are not properly caulked. The ball joint socket may crack if the suspension is subject to an excessive load during driving. According to the report by the automaker, in the worst case the vehicle might become undriveable.
The company will reach out to the affected owners and dealers will replace the front lower control arms with modified parts.
