Mazda6 to Get Rear-Wheel Drive and Inline-Six Motor?

A coupe version might also be available.

The Mazda6 doesn’t get the attention it deserves, for whatever reason. The Japanese midsize sedan is sleek in design and has a comfortable cabin. However, sales have been declining for some time. The United States saw a drop in demand of 30.4 percent, to 21,524 units. However, Mazda hopes to rebound with its next-generation model.

It is possible to forget everything you know about the current car, as its replacement will be completely different. The Mazda6’s front-wheel drive architecture will no longer be available as the next Mazda6 is expected to adopt a rear-wheel-drive design. Car and Driver seem to know the direction Mazda’s flagship sedan is heading. Their details closely follow an report published last summer by Japanese magazine Best Car.

Mazda6 to Get Rear-Wheel Drive and Inline-Six Motor?

According to both sources, the car will have an RWD layout. This follows an announcement by Mazda about developing a SkyActiv-X inline-6 about a year ago. The important disclosure by Mazda in March 2019 Page 26 about financial results will be visible in black and white. It contains the words “straight six SkyActiv-X engine” as well as “straight six Skyactiv-D diesel.” This document also reveals that the engines will be engineered for large cars, with a longitudinal engine layout. It will also support mild-hybrid technology and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Car and Driver do not discuss how much power the gasoline straight-6 could produce, but the report refers to Best Car’s article which claims that output could reach 350 horsepower. The report also discusses how the Mazda6 could be seated on a platform developed with Toyota in order to reduce costs and speed development. However, nothing is yet official.

The new Mazda6 sedan is expected to produce a coupe version. This coupe will have only two doors. The sedan could be beat with the coupe stick, seeing as the stunning Vision concept pictured here had an extremely sloped roofline. There’s also a good chance that the 2017 showcar serves as a preview.

The company’s next-generation Mazda6 will go on sale in 2022. It is expected that it will help them achieve their upmarket ambitions of competing with luxury brands. Although the coupe with the tail-happy design is unlikely to be available until a later date it will surely be worth the wait.
