Is the 488 strong enough?
The McLaren 720S faced many worthy opponents in drag racing against two Lamborghinis – one supercharged Huracan, and the other is a stock Aventador SVJ. The 720S won both races fairly.
The 720S will be facing a Ferrari 488 Spider this time. Supercar enthusiasts know that the challenger is a stronger contender, with lower power output ratings. Is the 488 strong enough? Or does it need to be aided by the F8Tributo (images down)?
Let’s first compare the numbers to see how far the Ferrari is.
In stock form, the McLaren 720S is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engine. It can produce 710 horsepower (530 kW), and 568 poundfeet (5770 Nm) of torque. All that power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The 720S is also 3,180 pounds.
Ferrari 488 Spider has a smaller engine, 3.9L. It also features a twin-turbo V8. It produces 660 horsepower and 561 lbft of torque, but less power. The DCT is seven-speed and sends power to both the front and rear wheels. Their biggest difference is their combined weight. The 488 Spider weighs in at 3,362 pounds. This is a significant weight difference that can be rectified by adding a healthy passenger to the 720S.
You can pretty much predict the outcome of this race by its power output and weight. We are now curious about the F8 Tributo. With 720 horsepower and 568 Nm torque, the 488 replacement is a great match for the 720S. We can only hope DragTimes is able to race an F8 Tributo owner soon.
